For your transmission to remain healthy and reliable, it needs to be operating with the right amount of unpolluted fluid. When transmission fluid gets dirty and/or too low, significant problems are liable to emerge. Here are some of the commonly asked questions about transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid has multiple important jobs. It lubricates gears and clutch packs, prevents rust, and helps to keep the transmission cool. Also, it generates the fluid pressure required for proper functioning of the gearbox.
One common sign of a fluid-related issue is that your car abruptly jumps out of gear while you’re cruising along. Gear slippage can occur when pollutants in the transmission fluid obstruct the fluid’s flow. Consequently, fluid pressure can decrease to the point that the vehicle doesn’t stay in gear. Transmission fluid leaks are another common fluid-related problem. You may have a transmission fluid leak if there’s red-to-pink colored fluid on the ground underneath your vehicle.
It’s best to be in the habit of checking your transmission fluid once per month. This way, there’s a much better chance you’ll notice early on if the fluid is too low and/or burning. Transmission fluid is typically best checked with the car still running.
Transmission fluid is often supposed to be exchanged at a point between 30,000 and 50,000 miles, but you’ll want to refer to your owner’s manual to see how frequently your particular vehicle requires this important maintenance task.
