Common Signs of a Suspension Problem

Signs of suspension trouble sometimes arise during the braking process. With a faulty suspension, it can take your car longer to reach a full stop after you’ve begun braking. Also, a bad suspension can make it feel like your vehicle is lunging forward at a downward angle when you engage the brakes.

A classic sign of a suspension problem is that the car starts bouncing/shaking excessively when it goes over any mildly rough patch of road. If you hear clunking noises when going over bumps, then you could have a failing spring. Another indication of a damaged spring is that your car slouches in the affected corner.

You can get a better sense of your suspension’s health by conducting a simple test. For this test, first make sure your vehicle is securely parked on level ground. Then walk to the front of the vehicle, push down hard on the front end, rock it twice, and release. Next, go to the back of the vehicle and repeat this on the rear end. Upon letting go, your car should rock on its own no more than three times. If it rocks more than this, then suspension trouble could be brewing.

There are a couple of other common signs of suspension trouble to watch out for. For one, if your shocks have oil leaking out onto them, then replacement will likely be necessary. Also, your suspension could be in bad condition if it feels like your vehicle is drifting when you make sharp turns.
