What are some of the common causes of no-start and hard-starts?

Austin Auto Repair • 6 September 2023

As soon as you notice that your engine isn’t starting up as easily as usual, it’s important to get to the shop for diagnostics. If you delay, then the issue could soon worsen to the point that your car won’t fire up whatsoever and you end up stranded. At Austin Auto Repair, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying and repairing problems that cause no-starts and hard-starts.

Common Reasons that Cars Struggle to Start

A problem with the starter is one common reason that engines don’t fire up. One symptom of starter failure is that you turn the key to start the engine, your dash lights illuminate, but then you only get a clicking sound. A faulty starter may also cause a grinding sound.

Another common reason for no-start is that there’s an issue with fuel supply. A faulty fuel pump can prevent gas from properly moving from the tank to the engine. Warning signs of fuel pump failure include: sputtering, decreasing gas mileage, and a whining sound coming from the gas tank. A clogged fuel filter can also cause problems with getting your engine to fire up. It’s important to replace your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles so that the proper amount of fuel can easily reach your engine. Your engine might also have a hard time starting due to gunked-up fuel injectors.

Issues with the battery/charging system are also common reasons for no-start. Batteries often die because of things like loose/corroded connections, parasitic draws, old age, and forgetting to turn off headlights. A bad alternator can also lead to a dead battery. Symptoms of alternator failure include: problems with electrical accessories such as power windows and the radio; headlights acting erratically; and a warning light that comes on in the shape of a little battery or reads ALT or GEN.
